GNS was established in 1951, as Kilndried Timber Industries in Tasmania. Within the first five years of its incorporation, GNS acquired several companies in timber related industries including Dee River Saw Mills and Kilndried Building and Furniture Timbers. GNS became a public company in 1976. In 1986, a merger with Gunns Holdings to gain hardware and building supplies and contracting divisions resulted in a name change to Gunns Kilndried Timber Industries, subsequently shortened in 1993, to Gunns. It became the largest sawmiller in Tasmania with the acquisition of Kauri Timber Co in 1993. In 1994, it bought into timber retail through French's Pine World.
